Mario Checkers

February 19th, 2012 0 Comments

Another fun Mario board game that hit retail stores a while ago is Super Mario checkers / Tic tac toe combo. It’s basically the classic checkers game as you know, but with special Mario and Luigi pieces that move on a board made up of power-ups. Besides that, every player has a ‘king-piece’ which is a Mario or Luigi hat that you can ‘king’ from your opponent adding an extra fun twist to the game.

When you’re done playing checkers turn this board around and you can play a Mario and Luigi tic tac toe game, a great way to decide in an all-or-nothing who is the winner of this board. These are the items that come with the set:

  • 1 Double-Sided Game Board
  • 12 Mario Checker Pieces
  • 12 Luigi Checker Pieces
  • 2 Mario Hats for “Kinging”
  • 2 Luigi Hats for “Kinging”
  • Rules

Because of the small checker pieces this set is not suitable for children aged 3 and below. Recommended age is 6+.

Check out the video below for a closer look.

Super Mario Bros on iOS (or is it?)

January 16th, 2012 0 Comments

It’s time for a quick departure from all the regular Mario toys we’ve been covering on this blog lately. Today’s Gaming App of the day on Kotaku really grabbed our attention. We’re talking about Pixel Land, a platform game for iOS which at first seems like kind of an abstract pixel platformer. But when you take a closer look at this game you’ll notice a resemblance to everyone’s favorite classic NES game.

Yep, Pixel Land is an abstract version of the game many people grew up with. It has stripped down Super Mario Bros to a mere 64 pixels. The latest update (currently pending with Apple) brings sound and a short death scene to the game when you die and lets you have 3 hearts as an energy bar before you die.

As Mario fans, we’re loving it thusfar.

Top 5 Mario Toys This Holiday Season

December 6th, 2011 0 Comments

The holiday season is coming up and there are a lot of great Mario holiday gifts you can lay under your Christmas tree. If you have followed this blog around you probably already have your mind set on some great new Mario toys and games. Just think of the new Mario video games on the Nintendo 3DS or all the Mario Kart toys that came out recently. For some people the choices to make are hard. To aid you in your hunt for the best Mario toy you can give as a present this holiday season we’ve made a top five of our favorite Mario toys up until now. Let’s get straight to the goodies.

#5 – Mario Plush Toy

Mario Plush toys have been and will always be the right Mario toy you can give as a present during the holidays. This year makes no exception, the assortment of Mario plush online is immense, some are of better quality than others, you can always browse our selection of all quality Mario Plush toys, but you can never go wrong with the classic Super Mario plush doll. This particular one is not too big, of great, durable quality and has a big chance to become the most favorite plush in a kid’s plush toy collection.

#4 – Mario Wall Decorations

Some kids just love to decorate their walls with all kinds of posters, stickers and writing. At times the walls might end up like a mess this way, so why not give your small ones some great quality Mario wall decals for them to stick on their walls (under your guidance of course). Or even greater, you can secretly stick the Mario decals on the walls while your child is out of the room and surprise it when he or she enters the bedroom. You can really make it as big as you’d like, from small peel and stick wall decals to giant Mario wall decals. Click the links below for more information and pricing on the most popular ones currently available.

#3 – Super Mario Chess

This is currently one of the hottest Mario items sold online and for a good reason. Super Mario chess is regular chess, but with awesome Mario figurines instead of the standard chess pieces. Characters included are of course Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Yoshi Toad and many more. The chess pieces are of high and sturdy quality and make it much more fun and easier for kids to learn the basics of playing chess, with the pieces positioned in a ‘good vs. evil’ way. Besides playing chess, the pieces themselves can be played with separately, although they’re not suitable for the youngest of toddlers. And don’t think this is only for kids as this is also a gift loved by veteran chess players!

#2 – Nintendo 3DS Limited Edition with Super Mario 3D Land

If you’d really like to make an impression on any Mario fan this special edition of Nintendo’s latest handheld console would be a really great choice. The Nintendo 3DS now enjoys its peak in popularity with all the familiar game titles being released across the last few months of 2011 and on time for this holiday season. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario Land 3D are but a few titles released these last few weeks. Add to that Luigi’s Mansion 2 and Paper Mario 3DS that will be released very soon. For every Mario collector this particular Nintendo 3DS is a must-have in their collection, a limited-edition bundle version of the Nintendo 3DS with the newly released Super Mario 3D Land included in the box. It may cost a few bucks but it’s definitely the greatest handheld gaming experience currently available.

(Be aware that these limited edition bundles tend to run out fast during the holiday season, so act fast if you’re interested!)

#1 – K’NEX Mario Kart

‘And the number one Mario toy this holiday season iiiisss.. (drum roll)’ Never mind that. When you’ve been reading this blog for a while and/or checked out some previous posts, it would come as no surprise that we’re big fans of the awesome K’NEX Mario Kart Wii building sets which are the first result of K’NEX acquiring an official Nintendo license earlier this year. Each K’NEX Mario Kart building set comes with one (or two) buildable race cars which can be powered on and off with a switch at the bottom and several buildable race track parts, including some impressive obstacles which can be controlled manually by each player. The aim is to switch on the race kart, put it on the track you’ve built and try and annoy your opponents with all the obstacles on the track. It is without the doubt the greatest real-life alternative for a game of Mario Kart.

The standard sets generally contain one buildable race kart and a small amount of race track parts with which you can’t complete a full loop. You’ll have to buy more of them to make a full race track. Check out our coverage of all the building sets here.

If you’d like to buy only one set and be done with it, we would advise the Bowser’s Castle – Ultimate Building set.

So there you have it. You can’t go wrong with either of these Mario toys this holiday season. Whichever Mario toy you choose have a nice holiday season!

Real Life Mario Kart by West Coast Customs

November 18th, 2011 0 Comments

Real Life Mario KartIf you thought that the K’NEX Mario Kart sets were as real life as Mario Kart could possibly get, think again. For the promotion of the upcoming Mario Kart 7 title on the 3DS, Nintendo has teamed up with West Coast Customs, well-known for the MTV series Pimp My Ride, to create real-life, working Mario Karts. And they came out beautiful, being showcased friday at LA Auto Show where they will be on display until November 27th, 2011.

The two karts that were produced by West Coast Customs are modeled after two karts from the upcoming Mario Kart 7 game, that will be released on Nintendo 3DS in the beginning of December. One is the classic Mario Standard Kart and the other is the Luigi Bumble V kart which resembles a bumblebee and has a rear propeller for underwater navigation. In the Mario Kart 7 game that is.

What’s great is that one lucky person can win the Mario Standard Kart when the LA Auto Show is over. This person will have to be a member of GameStop PowerUp Rewards where the kart will be given away as part of the monthly Epic Reward Giveaway program. As a member the only thing you’ll have to do to be eligible for participation is to buy or trade something in the month December. The lucky winner will be announced in February. For more information check out

For more information, check out the video by on the LA Auto Show showcase of the karts:
